A very informative book about free radicals, anti-oxidants and longevity, focusing on the role of Alpha Lipoic Acid and its use in anti-aging in general, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and in neuroprotection. Other chapters deal with this role of this potent anti-oxidant in inflammatory disorders, HIV, and vision disorders like macular degeneration, cataracts and glaucoma
A meticulous and lucid writer and editor. Highly recommended read.

this may be the closest to a "definitive" textbook on Nutritonal Influences, biochemistry that you can find. Exceptionally authoratiative and well written. You will be hard pressed to not find the most detailed explanations of various biochemical functions and processes anywhere
I have read a lot of the reviews, both positive and negative and have to say, that until you try this program, completely try it 100%, then no, it probably won't work for you. I am finishing up week 8 in my second challenge and as a 42-year old woman, this program WORKS. I have lost weight, slowly and properly, I have lost inches, but most importantly I have gained tons of energy, self-esteem and confidence…. If you follow the program and nutrition/eating recommendations, you can't but help gain energy and lose the weight….
I do not claim to be any kind of expert in exercise or nutrition, but this works!!! As Bill says, "Change Your Mind - Change Your Body - Change Your Life!" Anything worth having is worth working hard for and this is no exception. After being on the program, you won't want to feed your body junk anymore. I love the workouts and crave them now!! I love the feeling of being strong and healthy. After 12 weeks is over, hopefully this will become a lifestyle for you, as it will be for me. As one reviewer said, the pictures in the book are the exception, but with continued persistence, you can achieve the same results!! I can see it in me and love every minute of it!!
A must read for the next step in any Longevity and Anti-Aging program. Includes a four-part program that involves nutritional, stress-relieving, pharmacological, and mind-body exercises therapies to overcome the effects of brain aging, a guide helps readers over forty control a hormone called cortisol and improve their mental acuity.
still one of the sources to start your search.
This is the book that explains not only the conection and the actions of vitamin C on cancer, but also explains the use of the chemotherapy and radiotherapy in the kinds of cancers that it is necessary, and in what kinds it is not. There are many case histories that are covered and the explanations on how vitamin c is really woking on all types of cancers, and why the experience of both, ( the late great two time nobel price winner: Linus Pauling), and the Scottish oncologist: Ewan Cameron, that in 10 years of therapy with thousands of patients make the book possible to be published. This is Linus Pauling's last book before he died in 8.19.1994. In short, and in general, it is really a great combination of a chemist, and an oncologist.
Dr. Moss has put together an excellent resource for people looking into non-toxic cancer treatments. Ralph was thrust into the alternative medicine scene when he brought positive laetrile studies to the public's attention in the1970s when people were saying there was no evidence of laetrile's efficacy. Since then he has been an important voice of reason in the fight for alternatives.
This book is a well-researched sourcebook for new and innovative cancer treatments. The book is divided into various sections. The first is "Vitamins," where Moss provides research on vitamins, such as Vitamin D, on cancer research. Moss details studies that have been conducted with vitamins.
Other sections include, "Minerals" such as Calcium, "Herbs" such as Aloe, "Diets" such as Gerson, and "Less Toxic Resources" such as Amygdalin and Hydrazine Sulfate. In total he lists over 100 therapies.
At the end of each section there are resources for each therapy. For instance, he gives addresses of clinics using the methods.
The book that advanced the new protein revolution along with Dr. Atkins. This gets one of our highest recommendations.]
For years experts have been telling Americans what to eat and what not to eat. Fat, they told us, was the enemy. Then it was salt, then sugar, then cholesterol… and on it goes.
Americans listened and they lost -- but not their excess fat. What they lost was their health and waistlines. Americans are the fattest people on earth… and why? Mainly because of the food they eat.
In this scientific and revolutionary book, based on Nobel Prize-winning research, medical visionary and former Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher Dr. Barry Sears makes peak physical and mental performance, as well as permanent fat loss, simple for you to understand and achieve.
With lists of good and bad carbohydrates, easy-to-follow food blocks and delicious recipes, The Zone provides all you need to begin your journey toward permanent fat loss, great health and all-round peak performance. In balance, your body will not only burn fat, but you'll fight heart disease, diabetes, PMS, chronic fatigue, depression and cancer, as well as alleviate the painful symptoms of diseases such as multiple sclerosis and HIV.
This Zone state of exception
[Read anything by Dharma Singh Khlasa. These are all highly recommended sources.]
The author, a physician and a yogi, follows up on his Meditation as Medicine with this guide to nutritional therapy. Together with drinking recommended juices and taking vitamins and herbs, this diet, according to Khalsa, will lead to a healthier, disease-free life. He bases his program on the seven principles of yoga nutritional therapy: body detoxification; the use of organic products; elimination of genetically engineered foods; eating only clean protein (e.g., fish, soy, beans, legumes); fresh juices and supplements; cooking consciously and eating mindfully; and a complete transition to a yoga nutrition therapy diet.
Fans of Andrew Weil (Eating Well for Optimum Health) and Deepak Chopra (How to Know God) will appreciate the author's combination of spirituality and diet. Khalsa offers a low-fat diet that is rich in grains, organic fruits and vegetables and non-meat protein. A variety of useful recipes with these components are included here as well as suggestions for maintaining peaceful meal times and a spiritually balanced life.
Although this particular nutritional program should improve physical well-being, he also maintains that his nutritional plan can reverse many serious diseases. Interestingly enough,
From our most recommended author comes another best seller. Our mantra: less fat and carbohydrates, more protein. High quality protein. So you can see that we do not entirely agree with the notion that fat does not make any difference -- it does. But the substance of Dr. Sears And Dr. Atkins is undeniable -- more protein.
from the book:
Flying in the face of conventional dietary thinking, and after years of comprehensive scientific research, Dr. Sears discovered that "eating fat doesn't make you fat." His phenomenally successful first book, The Zone, introduced the world to to groundbreaking health plan that for hundreds of thousands of readers has become the magic key to maintaining a consistent level of physical and mental well-being -- a healthful state known as "The Zone."
Now Dr. Sears takes his breakthrough scientific discoveries and stunning success a step further with Mastering the Zone, which not only presents delicious, completely original Zone-favorable recipes that are easy to prepare and taste as good as they are good for you, but also offers a practical guide to fine-tuning your place in the Zone.
from an online reviewer:
This is the most informative book I have read all year! Dr. Khalsa gives lots of background studies to back up the use of meditation for healing.
Having Dr. Khalsa from the medical profession make a statement that maybe medicating clients isn't always healing, indicates that there is a turn; a turn inward. In these times of turmoil, this book is a godsend. There are distinct instructions for implementing the meditations for the various chakras. If you can do just one of these meditations, you will find a plethora of benefits in the long run.
Use this book to tap into the strongest pharmacy on earth: your mind!
A good authoratative text by well qualified professionals providing you with long sought after information.
Steven Bratman, M.D., medical director of Prima Health, has many years of experience in the alternative medicine field. From one of the true pioneers along with Abram Hoffer, this forms the roots of modern orthomolecular psychiatry or non-pharmaceutical drug-based psychiatry.
Carl Pfeiffer was one of the doctors, who beginning in the 50s, looked for nutrional causes of psychotic disorders. And they did find that some syndromes such as pyroluria did deplete a crucial vitamin (B6) to a critical extent, and that supplementing this vitamin returned many to sanity.
By the time this was established however, the preferred treatment of such disorders were heavy medications, which had vested interests behind them. In 1973 studies were done, which Dr. Pfeiffer and others alledged didn't adequately reflect their treatment guidelines, that did not get any positive results, and the idea that vitamin and mineral deficiencies may play a role in psychotic disorders was declared to be "junk science." One of the five experts on the panel that investigated this treatment approach announced publically before the study that even if every other psychiatrist in the United States would adopt vitamins and minerals in their armamentarium of treatments for schizophrenia, he would refuse to believe they work or use them. One wonders whether the panel was unbiased.
As you may know, doctors that practice medicine based on "junk science" ca
A great resource. Highlyr ecommneded. Practicle and quite readable.

Based on cutting-edge research, this revolutionary, medically sound, deliciously satisfying plan has already helped thousands of patients lose weight and achieve other lifesaving health benefits, including lower cholesterol and blood pressure readings and an improvement or reversal of common disorders such as heart disease, adult-onset diabetes, and gout. Developed by Doctors Michael and Mary Dan Eades, the simple regimen calls for a new way of eating: a protein-rich, moderate-fat, low-carbohydrate diet that will have you feeling better and more energetic within a week, and correct blood sugar levels, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol within three weeks.
Here, the Eades show you why their plan is so potent: how it works with your body's metabolic biochemistry; how it brings powerful metabolic hormones, including insulin, into balance; and why this balance is necessary to achieve permanent weight loss and free you from reliance on costly and dangerous medications to control blood pressure and cholesterol.
Dr.Paul Yanick introduces readers of all ages to how they can achieve maximum health and longevity by using nutrient-rich Quantum Foods that aid natural detoxification processes and support the body's own hormone production. Readers will learn how to detoxify the body with protective, energy-producing Quantum Foods, lose weight and keep it off with the unique Quantum Nutrition plan that addresses the hormonal/pollutant connection, enhance immunity against the onslaught of powerful new bacteria and viruses, improve sexual performance by eliminating pollutants that block sex hormones, and age-proof both mind and body.
From the authors of Smart Drugs come the sequel. These are still classics. You do not ned to take everything written as literal and sicnce and medicine are changing rapidly in this field, sop these become a good starting point. We then recommend the site www.antiaging-systems.com for further reference if you cannot obtain these from a good competent Anti-Aging physician here in the US.
For those looking for the omnibus, cover-all reference book on nutrition, this is it. It is a thoroughly comprehensive examination of nutrition from just about every possible facet. Dr. Haas incorporates most of the more modern and alternative thinking on nutrition, even going so far as to examine environmental and spiritual issues, while avoiding the extreme, faddish ideas either of the medical establishment or the alternative fringe. He really does seem to have taken the time to weigh the value of studies done in both the mainstream and alternative research communities and brought together the clear, probable truths from both camps. And by the same token, he provides warnings against the doubtful claims of both sides.
Nature’s cycles affect not only the external climate, but also our internal health and mental well-being. With this as its primary tenet, STAYING HEALTHY WITH THE SEASONS revolutionized the fields of preventive and integrated medicine when it was first published in 1981, and introduced a seasonal approach to nutrition, disease prevention, and mind-and-body fitness. A leading practitioner of the season-based lifestyle theory, Dr. Elson Haas provides simple, logical advice for achieving glowing good health: Bring the mind and body into balance with the earth, and consume a diet that emphasizes in-season, chemical-free foods. Joining Western and Eastern medicines with seasonal nutrition, herbology, and exercise practices, this timeless classic, revised for the 21st century, provides the keys to staying healthy from spring right on through winter.
Jean Carper is highly readable and this another in a good series. We do not consider the "last work" and so you turn to other texts on this list. But, again, this is a good overview.
In Stop Aging Now!, Jean Carper, the bestselling author of Food -- Your Miracle Medicine, has written a breakthrough, cutting-edge book documenting that the ravages of aging are not inevitable and, in fact, can be prevented or reversed. Written in Carper's lively and compelling style, Stop Aging Now! Reveals how you can combat aging, as well as cancer, heart disease, immune dysfunction and other age-related diseases, by taking specific vitamins, supplements and herbs and eating an anti-aging diet.
Stop Aging Now! Is based on hundreds of trailblazing studies by scientists from prestigious institutions, including Harvard University and the National Institutes of Health, who are discovering the incredible truth about the aging process: that much of it is not inevitable, and that what we call "normal aging" actually is often due to unsuspected deficiencies that readily can be corrected by taking antioxidant vitamins, minerals, herbs and food chemicals.
If you have Syndrome X -- and 60 to 75 million Americans do -- the widely recommended low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet may be the surest route to a heart attack. Now, Gerald Reaven, M.D., the pioneering Stanford University doctor who discovered Syndrome X, explains why:
Tested in carefully controlled research settings and in practice, the Syndrome X program is safe, effective, and easy to follow.
At last we have a book that explains some of the mystery behind middle-age. Syndrome X is the first book to present the new science explaining mid-life weight gain, rising cholesterol levels, and dropping energy levels. Yes, your middle-age metabolism is different and these changes have more to do with your diet and nutrition than your age!
Syndrome X will help you put together a plan to overcome resistance to your own insulin. This is more than an abstract concept, it is the essence behind the current epidemic of obesity, high blood pressure and adult-onset diabetes.
Author's Challem, Berkson, and Smith are to be commended. They have written an easy to understand book which provides a common sense plan for overcoming Syndrome X. Most importantly they cut through the current rhetoric and teach you how to treat yourself with a healthy diet. Everyone should read this book and take a copy to their doctor.
Dr. Cranton is the leading expert in chelation therapy, and this book is clearly the most up-to-date review of how this therapy is done, the historical background, and the scientific data that show its value in the treatment of heart disease and other vascular disease.
If you want to know the details of this therapy, don't ask your doctor--this is the book to read. In spite of opposition to chelation therapy by the mainstream medical community, this textbook tells the real truth about it. It is hard to find valid, scientifically backed information about chelation, and if you ask your doctor, you will likely be led away from this valuable therapy that is better documented than bypass surgery and angioplasty.
While you may need some scientific background to understand all of the material, most readers will be able to understand enough to get a clear picture.
The book is well organized. For doctors interested in more information about chelation, this is a great place to start. With the protocol for treatment, you will have a good guide to this therapy.
Other books strictly for the layperson do not go into such detail and show you how the treatment is done, although they may be less technical for the less serious reader.
A groundbreaking discovery in heart disease prevention led the American Heart Association to hail this landmark research that pinpointed insulin as "the most statistically significant predictor of heart attack risk"--more than smoking, body mass index, triglyceride levels, and physical inactivity--and equal to cholesterol levels.
After years of medical research, the truth is out: too much insulin in your body can lead directly to heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and excessive weight gain. What causes insulin levels to rise? Foods rich in carbohydrates--not just starches, salty snacks, and sweets--but even low-cal foods once thought to be good for you, such as salad with low-fat dressing, pita bread, diet soda, and vegetarian lasagna. Like millions of Americans, you, too, may experience intense and recurring carbohydrate cravings--a compelling hunger for foods that, in time, will wreak havoc on your body, drive up your insulin levels, and seriously compromise your health.
Now Drs. Richard and Rachael Heller, the New York Times bestselling authors of The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet, and cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Frederic J. Vagnini, share their breakthrough program that incorporates all the latest findings to help prevent and reverse heart disease and its many damaging risk factors. Compatible with die
Coenzyme Q10 (often abbreviated as CoQ10) is essential for human life. It catalyzes the formation and utilization of energy in every human cell.
Fortunately, our bodies manufacture CoQ10. Unfortunately, some people do not manufacture enough CoQ10 to keep them healthy, especially as they grow older.
Research has shown that deficiency of CoQ10 is the major cause of cardiomyopathy, and congestive heart failure and these diseases can often be cured by CoQ10 supplementation. Even many heart transplant candidates have no longer needed a heart transplant after supplementation with CoQ10. Now it has been found that CoQ10 can also prevent -- and, sometimes, even cure -- cancer, as well a variety of other diseases.
Dr. Stephen Sinatra -- a board-certified cardiologist -- is a world-renowned expert on CoQ10 and its health benefits. I beg your to buy and read this book and heed Dr. Sinatra's information and advice.
Wonderful short book on newer concepts of cardio vascular disease and health. A must read including sensible exercise and eating routines.
This book should find its way onto the shelf of any self-respecting cardiologist, preferably dislodging the seriously over-used prescription pad from its prominent position front and center in the battle against heart disease. Highly recommended to one and all!
Nobody can beat James Duke at comfortable pop-level communication combined with solid, informed good judgement. In this book he gives practical preparation and dosage suggestions -- something the too-careful books don't do. He also provides clear, definite cautions on drug interactions and side-effects.
My only criticism of Duke's book is that he may be a bit too confident when he suggests combining several herbs at once to treat some conditions. Folklore and formal studies may provide reasonable dosage guides for individual herbs. But no single folklore or ancient system encompasses, at once, medicinal plants of South America, China, and Europe. Combining herbs that have not been traditonally used, nor clinically tested, in such combination, is not something I would advise to a general audience.
Nevertheless I rate this book very highly. I don't know how many copies of the previous edition I bought to give to people: teenagers, undergraduate college students, my old hippy friends, my father, doctors, and various people who ask me about medical botany.

John Gray's "The Mars & Venus Diet & Exercise Solution" is a remarkable achievement. That an expert in relationships has taken the time and effort to read and master esoteric research on brain chemistry and made it accessible and usable for us lay readers is amazing.
Edwards Deming, the quality guru, once said: "It's not what you don't know that's the problem; it's what you know that's NOT SO!" Gray punctures many of the myths about diet and exercise that people have been religiously following for years. The famous Pritikin and Atkins diets, for example, do not emerge unscathed.
This is not just another weight-loss book. People suffering from conditions as desparate as ADD/ADHD, addictions, brain concussions, or depression, to name a few, can find valuable new approaches to treatment. It's actually a book on how to effectively manage your own brain chemistry.
The book challenges the dominance in our culture of allopathic (that is, traditional) medicine with its overuse of powerful drugs and their side effects. It supports the use of alternative therapies such as homeopathy and aromatherapy. And it is not "one size fits all": Gray makes careful distinctions, not only by gender as one would expect from the creator of the Mars/Venus school of gender differences, but by body type as well. What
In her highly successful The Diet Cure, Julia Ross helped thousands of readers halt food cravings and end dieting by rebalancing their body chemistry. Now, in The Mood Cure, Julia Ross once again draws on her years of experience as a psychotherapist, clinic director, and pioneer in the field of nutritional psychology to present breakthrough solutions for people looking for help with depression, anxiety, mood swings, irritability, and sleep problems that diminish the quality of their lives.
The Mood Cure is a comprehensive program that includes the use of amino acids (which provide results in 24 hours) combined with a high-protein, good fat, veggie-rich diet and other nutritional strategies. Beginning with a 4-part questionnaire to identify one's bad mood type, The Mood Cure will help to:
Followers of Sears' zone diet probably have a hard enough time balancing their carbohydrate consumption with their protein and fats. Now, if they opt for Sears' latest scheme, the "next generation of the Zone," they're going to have to start gulping fish oil, which contains the all-important omega-3 fatty acids. And not just any fish oil. "High-dose pharmaceutical-grade fish oil" only, and don't think it's easy to get one's hands on this stuff. Only two companies manufacture it; all the others stick to low-grade fish oil.
Sears predicts more companies (His own? Just asking.) will get into the high-end fish-oil business once they realize that it can prevent or reverse heart disease, diabetes, neurological disorders, and cancer. Is any of this true? Who knows? In 352 pages, Sears quotes from studies on Eskimos and hypothesizes that modern man separated himself from the apes when he started eating fish, but in the end, readers will need to judge for themselves.
(Sears does mention--but discounts--a few potential side effects, including bleeding and increased incidence of strokes.) Bottom line: More than you ever wanted to know about omega-3 fatty acids. Ilene Cooper
They have it right. These are the closest to our philosophy and approach -- raise your high-quality protein. It is the traditional source of high value nutrition.
The authors of Protein Power are back to advocate the "protein-rich, moderate-fat, carbohydrate-restricted diet" that opposes the high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet that every professional medical and dietetic organization (including those who have no diet books to sell) believes to be your best bet for avoiding heart disease, the number one killer.
The authors insist, in the face of all this medical opposition, that "the whole idea that fat and cholesterol cause heart disease is just that: an idea." We're meant to be hunters, say the authors: bring on the meat. Let's go back to the Paleolithic diet (no mention of the brief life span of Paleolithic men and women).
The Protein Power Lifeplan is not easy reading--most of the book is made up of scientific explanations, research summaries and interpretations, and nutritional warnings--but no recipes. Besides recommending eating protein and fat, the authors recommend sunbathing without sunblock (but "never, never let your skin burn!") and exercises such as "bringing home the buffalo" and "defending the camp."
The authors admit that if you're trying to lose weig
Anti-aging guru Roizen and celebrated heart surgeon Oz combine their popular approaches to patient-centered care in this assessment of how much, or more to the point, how little, readers know about their bodies. After taking the quizzes in the book, readers may feel shocked by their ignorance of basic anatomy and the processes required to maintain physical and mental functioning. Each chapter focuses on a body part or system (heart, brain, digestive, reproductive, etc.) and discusses diseases associated with it; genetic and lifestyle influences on its aging process; and foods, supplements and habits that can prevent or reverse related illnesses.
Here's the follow-up to The Zone and Mastering the Zone. Author Barry Sears, Ph.D., has formulated a way for readers to follow his diet plan (30 percent fat, 40 percent each carbohydrates and protein) by breaking down foods into measurable units, à la Weight Watchers. It's designed to make eating on the run--even if you're stopping at McDonald's--a Zone-friendly experience. But it's not exactly a piece of cake.
